The Work Dance

We'd only just met each other

In no way we're we close to lovers

Just co-workers who cared

Common ground we shared

It was a little after midday

When I saw her looking my way

Her sweet eyes staring into mine

I knew I'd be her putty at any time

She asked if I was going to the dance

What were the odds or any chance

I tried to play it cool with a touch of coy

Whenever she was around I felt like a little boy

I told her if she sees me there, she sees me there

But there was something lonely In her stare

She said the dance was around seven

She'd be there till at least eleven

I went home to contemplate going

All the time not really knowing

All the managers and workers would be there

People I didn't want to be anywhere near

I paced fourth and back all night

Listening to my head and heart fight

What could a beautiful girl want with me

Under all those lights she would soon come to see

The truth revealed that I already knew

In due time she would find out too

She was a princess with hopes and dreams

I was just a cowboy with worn blue jeans

We were worlds apart from each other

Maybe all we'd have this night, is one another

The clock kept ticking as did these thoughts in my head

Should I take an aspirin and just go to bed

Should I just take a chance

Show up at the dance

I know she expected me to show

All my friends urging me to go

I was a modern day drifter in a place I didn't belong

She was just one wild horse I couldn't stay on

As the clock ticked past seven o clock

I had to face facts she was a heart I couldn't unlock

Truth be told I put on my boots and jeans and started my car

I was on my way to the dance but knew I wouldn't get that far

I stopped and thought I cant so I headed back home

I'm a victim of circumstance that's why I'm alone

I heard the next day she waited for me to show

It was way after midnight when they saw her go

We ran into each other the very next day

I could sense in her eyes she wasn't okay

I knew I'd let her down that was plain to see

The spark that once was there was gone because of me

There was rumours she was leaving way before the dance

Now had come to fruition by happenstance

She invited me to her send off I guess for one last shot

But in the midst of it all to message me she forgot

I took that on the chin and forgave her straight away

I think she needed that to redeem herself in her own way

I often wonder if I had of gone to that dance

Would I have really ever had a chance

If I could go back and replay that day from the start

I'd absolutely one hundred percent take part

I'd show up on the dance floor in complete surprise

Make eye contact from across the room she'd forget all the other guys

I'd take her hand in front of everyone and pull her close

Telling her out of all the girls it's her I loved the most

But I guess that never happened and unlikely never again

It was just a small reminder or a trip down memory lane

Sometimes things happen which don't work out

No matter how much love you had for them or felt

You win some you lose some they say

But in all honesty I'm not a big fan of a cliché

I'll remember this tho the way she looked at me

It's like there was something no one else could see

They way her hazel eyes touched me like none before

It's something I've carried with me I can't ignore

I know it's wrong to always think what might have been I must admit

But surely to recall a time of bitter sweet isn't all bad if only for a visit

Ah, wonderwall, it’s plain to see you have a beautiful heart. Another gorgeous poem! Very bittersweet and sentimental, and from the heart. Thank you!

Ah yes. There do be the special ones.
There in the wake of this life long flight I take.
As ghost they lay undone and strewn
The high hopes and possibilities in ruin
    Awesome poetry WW. Awesome indeed.
