Reflections of a Cowboy

Staring in this mirror I see him hidden in me eyes

A reflection of a silhouette riddled with ancient ties

Stirring souls within this mirror image slowly arise

As I battle until the weaker ones demise

In ever changing prairies where life evolves

Piece by piece this outlaws essence dissolves

Traded me soul in for whiskey to fan my fires

Lost me heart in raging storms of desire

I recall in these prairies a remote memory

Many sunsets ago who the outlaw used to be

Walking in both realms has taken its hearty toll

Blackened the edges of what was a kindred soul

This reflection an image of what was and what is

Reminiscing the olden days is what I'll mostly miss

Earning pay dirt calling this unknown prairie home

Encircled by his new posse but he'll always be alone

He hunts for this mysterious unicorn to find his claim

To have it said his life's work wasn't all in vain

Where once it use to shine like neon lights

It grows darker by the day and lighter by night

He strolls through life on paths less trodden

Drifting from towns like a gypsy times forgotten

A stranger among strangers in a exotic place

A drifter out of touch with the human race

With a swallow of whiskey he begins to understand

This reflection who stares back is now a changed man

A victim of his own deeds who failed to learn

With match in hand only one bridge left to burn

Chasing a reflection that's long been erased

His cowboy directives he's somehow lost base

The morals instilled have become muddied waters

Without his mentor he's not fulfilling his order

Only chance left is of this magical unicorn he speaks

To breath life back into him before he's too weak

He's still got the heart but not the legs anymore

To survive any war you have to become war

Yes there within that polish glass we do often see what we were, what we are and what we may well be.
How one may confirm or change a reflection once reflected is the ongoin’ task of such nomadic spirits as we.
Always in top form wonderwall your poetry and a lift and inspiration to this Birds wings you be.

Wow! There are some very impressive lines in this poem, wonderwall! I particularly like, “It grows darker by the day and lighter by night”, and especially – “To survive any war you have to become war”. Awesome how you tied it all together. Really nice work!
