Here's to you my friend

For over nine years side by side

Together on this tumultuous ride

I feared this day would come friend

When our partnership would end

A feline of reputable blood lines

Was early when he showed first signs

An extension of my own spirit

My animal equal of worthy merit

Walked where angels feared to tread

The pack he undoubtedly led

A king of kings he was indeed

Valiant and brave like a noble steed

He lived like a lion in his domain

Striking fear with only his name

Unchallenged and unsurpassed

His lineal creed will be the last

One of the last immortals to be summoned

Until the gods choose me to come in

I knew him well, I knew him best

Gone to be with all the rest

I wasn't there when i heard the news

Believing it at first I chose to refuse

I've been in distant prairies workin

It don't make the loss any less hurtin

My trusty friend I just could not take

An emptiness he just couldn't shake

They said he just looked lonely

Waiting for my return only

Waiting on his chair for me

Regret now is all I see

The truth of it all is I was lost too

Something I guess he never knew

I owed a lot to him for many reasons

Helping me cope through the seasons

He was here when mama and nana were alive

Like a beacon of hope he helped me survive

In his eyes they said you could see

He was heart stricken without me

Leaving him behind I see my error

Losing him like this was my terror

Left to wonder if I'd ever return

A harsh lesson id come to learn

It was him that left he couldn't wait

Today I lost my last best mate

Some say he was just a furry feline

There was a bond he was mine

In his eyes I felt our souls linked

A blood contract we both inked

Like a comfort he was always around

Gone forever he's prairie bound

To join my immortal clan

His eternal timer ran out of sand

Tis all I dream in slumber I lay

On my coffin they'll sprinkle red clay

Signifying the end has come

Laying in peace under the sun

I'll get the nod to saddle my steed

To showcase my cowboy creed

Heading to a cantina called heaven

Where my posse awaits numbering over eleven

Galloping towards that mecca of a ghost town

Where my posse awaits for the final sound

All awaiting around an old poker table

Until one day when they are able

To hear the footsteps from me boots

A homecoming of my earthily roots

Pushing through these saloon doors

Hearing spurs on the hardwood floor

Turning around in their chairs to see

A dusty cowboy who looks just like me

Finally a whole again all my peeps and pets

Paid in full my earth bound debts

It's all I dream of now, to be there

Why doesn't life let me go from here

It's cruel demeanour will ensure I'll wait

Until I've lost every last mate

To join my posse is all I desire

To tell you different I'd be a liar

Somedays it hurts more than others do

Two immortals left, the last I wonder who

A vendetta with life I'll probably be last

Cursed to be the one who hasn't passed

In due time I'll sleep peacefully with the rest

I'll be summoned to trot home heading west

Maybe forgiveness will find me down this trail

Where my prairies will reveal my holy grail

So until then another loss is one nearer

Through the prairie dust it will all become clearer

My heartfelt condolences- I know the ache of losing such faithful (even if furry) companionship isn’t easy.
Am now blessed to have a cat compadre
and years ago had a dog who was one of the best-
but like all good things, their short though generously lived lives come too soon to an end-
Here’s a quiet moment of commiseration for your lost fur-friend…

    You’re most welcome.
    .
It struck a chord with me as we adopted a rescue cat from the RSPCA earlier this year, and I feel the same way about her too.
    .
Our pets are part of our family too, and this write is evidence of the depth you feel for him. He’s a gorgeous looking boy ! May you always cherish the good times, and snuggles he may have given to you.

You have out done yourself here WW79. Tis the providence of nature that decides the time.

It’s no fault or sin on you. Though little comfort right now it’s true. But indeed it is as you know and say. We will join up with all our special ones some day. Tis that same providence that will decide. Our turn in line to make our final flight or ride.
What’s more is I have it on reliable observation. That upon reaching our last destination. The round up there is not the end of our story. No tis indeed the beginning of our homecoming glory.

Well black bird I don’t doubt you for one second, yes just a mere thought from underneath my hat.!!!
Seems like the seats around me campfire are lowering in numbers as the years dwindle as it is so.!!
I shall be the last left I’d imagine to put out the ashes to complete this chapter and spur in to another.
It certainly is always an honour to hear what you say BB it truly is and will always be.
Tipping my brim as usual to you in the sky

So many campfires on the road behind me now. All ashes to ashes dust to dust. The only ones sill lit and warm be the ones that will glow on the road well after this Bird has left the campsite for that last flight into that long dark night.
